What's Up Down Under Adventure: Day 7

Day 7 Blog

Location: Kununurra, WA

Another beautiful day, and after some breakfast everyone begins to pack up. Once all the vans were connected and loaded, the convoy leaves the Kimberlyland Caravan park to journey to the Gibb River Road, which is the main adventure for this trip. We hope to make it to the Pentecost River to free camp there tonight. As usual, I am travelling with Jude in the Red Center Ford Ranger campervan, which is so comfortable to travel in and very well decked out!

We travel the Victoria Hwy out of Kununurra for about 50km and then take a left onto the Gibb River Road. We stop for some pics and the signs are all positive that the Gibb is open to 4WD’s. After the brief stop and some group pics, we head down the Gibb. The scenery is great, and the road is surprisingly sealed all the way to the Pentecost river. This is surprising as the last time Dean from Red Center Caravans did the trip a few years ago, they lost bitumen pretty quickly once on the Gibb, so they have added a lot!

About 120km and we reach the Pentecost River. A quick look up on Wiki camps to see if spots are available and we get feedback to try the right-hand side of the bank. Dean in the lead van goes first to suss it out and then gives the ok via the UHF to say we can all come in. It’s a bit soft under wheel and bumpy but we all make it in ok and set-up for the night. The Pentecost where we are on the right-hand side of the crossing is salt water, so we all need to be alert, and certainly no swimming here, as there will be saltwater crocs around. There isn’t much space back from the river, so I set my swag up about 10m from the river…. Hmm a bit nervous but assured I will be fine, by Macca.

The boys try a bit of fishing but no luck. Another great dinner and Maccas meeting and tomorrow we are going to Ellenbrae station. After the meeting we try out the Olight Marauder Mini to spotlight on the river for crocs. Everyone is blown away by the power of this little torch and turns night into day going to a massive 7,000 lumens. But no crocs spotted, which is actually a good thing to me! Everyone off to bed as its early start again and hit the road in the morning.
